Plenty of Gracia Plena

AnnunciationIt takes two perfect people to have the perfect relationship. Some spouses will compliment the other one saying that the other person’s perfection makes it happen.  That sounds sweet, but it is not entirely accurate when humanity is involved.  But not so if one is divine.   But if one is divine and changes the setting for the human involved then the whole dynamic is different. Grace tends to do that.

A prime example for one who could see the kingdom of God for all it is as part of long-term called out community of God was someone who was “full of grace”.  This is why the first “micro-church” I will address is Mary of Nazareth.  For a teenage girl, she had a lot to say because she was “full of grace” and was a daughter of Zion. Such is the case in the Bible when one comes to Mary. 

Here we see the most perfect collaboration between the infinite God, through an angel, and a finite, specially touched human.  She was specifically a young woman in an age where women were not highly esteemed.  But in relationship to God, she is empowered in a faith journey that is not for cowards of either gender. She has faith and knew what it was to step up in courage. 

There is another part to the historical backdrop in the Bible before getting to Mary: unfaithfulness.  God’s people in the Old Testament were described as unfaithful with those who  struggled righteously and unrighteously living one day at a time.  God starts things anew with someone in Mary that had a context of being faithful to God and called to be on the offense just like what light does with darkness.

  “And he [Gabriel] came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!’ But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.  And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”(Luke 1:27-33).

Hail— The “Hail” is not a casual “hi”.  If one looks at the correspondence of the first century between highly esteemed officials, this word is used only to someone of notable, royal distinction.  Mary had that going on as one set aside by the King of the Universe for a special station in life.

Yet from an Old Testament perspective there is a Zion, or Davidic dynasty, connection.  The following verse from Pope Benedict XVI is pointed out also with that same Greek word, “Rejoice, daughter of Zion; shout, Israel…the king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst” (Zephaniah 14-17).  Pope Benedict also states, “The essential reason for the daughter of Zion to rejoice is stated in the text itself; ‘the Lord is in your midst’.  Literally it says: ‘he is in your womb’ (Pope Benedixt XVI, Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives).  What is being heralded in just that word alone is like a shorthand for God’s kingdom to come—- and is coming now in the Christmas Story.

Full of Grace—  The original Greek is Kecharitomene, the perfect passive participle, shows a “completeness with a permanent result. Kecharitomene denotes continuance of a completed action” (H. W. Smyth, Greek Grammar [Harvard Univ Press, 1968], p. 108-109, sec 1852:b; also Blass and DeBrunner, p. 175).  Or one can say she was too full of grace to have room for anything else.  Therefore, to me, she stands as the perfect prototype, as the Theotokos (God-bearer as defined in the Council of Ephesus 431), and how the Bride of Christ is supposed to be.  The words I have commented on here and others to come in the infancy era of Jesus indicated she was without sin.  The Early Church Fathers were unanimous on this point and also Luther for those of you who are Protestants.

“But the other conception, namely the infusion of the soul, it is piously and suitably believed, was without any sin, so that while the soul was being infused, she would at the same time be cleansed from original sin and adorned with the gifts of God to receive the holy soul thus infused. And thus, in the very moment in which she began to live, she was without all sin…(Martin Luther, Weimar edition of Martin Luther’s Works,

English translation edited by J. Pelikan [Concordia: St. Louis], Volume 4, 694).

So here we have royalty for a grand scale and grace with even grander ramifications all set for an expanding influence as demonstrated further.

The Lord is with you…she was greatly troubled—-  This is not a goose bump phrase. This phrase in the Old Testament was for servants of God like Moses, Joshua and David who would go into the land promised to them by covenant.  They were used by God for natural warfare for that level of revelation in the Old Covenant.  Mary was to be used, launched in the contexts of covenants, to expand God’s influence through a spiritual warfare but at that moment she did not know that.  She just knew that this greeting indicated a level and form of influence beyond what she would think was her humble state in life could handle.  So there was some fear there. Her scope of knowledge would assume a troubling battle of flesh and steel like a middle-eastern Joan of Arc.

Do not be afraid, Mary… you have found favor with God. — Mary was full of grace but Gabriel elaborated that God’s favor for her and her mission was in grace to overflow by the direct hand of God with one undeniable fact—  the source and summit of the grace and favor for her was external to her in God.

you will conceive—  as the angel unfold’s God’s plan for her life there is a connection to the Incarnation.

you shall call his name Jesus—- Jesus means “God saves”.   The Incarnation means salvation in some way yet to be revealed.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;—-  Here is the framework in that it will be in the pattern of David as the throne is from David.  This savior would be one with a visible kingdom. 

and of his kingdom there will be no end——  The declaration of God Incarnate and being savior of the world happens within a framework of a kingdom that has no end and thus continues.

On the devotional side, how can a modern person relate to these lofty subjects?  Well, we know through the rest of the story that Mary cooperated with a kingdom that is personal, holistic, authoritative and beyond our early lives.  These are ways that God initiates to us for full participation.  But in some ways our calling is not as good as Mary’s, in that moment, but better.  She was to carry God in her womb.  If we respond in the same humility to the gospel of the kingdom, we carry Jesus in our hearts. Could that be better?  Could that be possible?  What’s stopping you?

Nothing of Importance Happened Today

Walking on a roadA day in our lives that we say that nothing happened is really a matter of perspective.  “Nothing of importance happened today” was written in the journal of King George III on July 4th, 1776.   Any American reader of that quote would say that this was the day America declared its independence from England and that king was missing a vital perspective.

Every big enterprise will be built on dramatic event days but also those days when they were just on the way. So too did the new disciples of Jesus that first week that he stopped being an plain carpenter.  Walking with him on the road to a wedding, there were various thoughts they must have had from their respective experiences.  One can imagine what they thought their first encounters with Jesus might mean.

Day One some were prepared by the prophetic for the Lamb—prophetic in the sense of a sampler of the fulness to truth to come.  It is a preparation for truth and putting down the sins that would blind our eyes. On that day it was also pointed out that precious paradigms and even personal places of power were about to be shifted.  Some heard this and stayed for more.

Day Two some saw Jesus “fulfill all righteousness” as they “Beheld the Lamb” being baptized- – Sacramental experience of Jesus by Jesus.  God works to show us his ways through the material.  It is to be heavenly minded while in the context of the earthly goods.

Day Three- – Some saw Jesus as someone to dwell with and therefore fellowshipped with the Lamb- Holy Friendship. One only knows more if they come and see.

Day Four- Some saw Jesus as one who calls one to a personal mission of service to Jesus and his kingdom.- Ongoing obedience.

Day Five- Jesus invited the openness of hard inquiry  or to examine the Lamb- – Contemplation.  Ongoing engagement of reason is not an enemy of faith.  “The Truth, which is Christ, imposes itself as an all-embracing authority which holds out to theology and philosophy alike the prospect of support, stimulation and increase (Fides Et Ratio, para.92).

Day 6-  One may be quick to look at these ways to experience Christ as their favorite or objectively the best.  I would suggest that the initial and ongoing follower of Jesus Christ needs them all; all of the above are treasured in the heart and are part of something akin to a flashpoint of conversion.

Day 7-   The conversion of the heart.  One now believes in Jesus with willingness to obey.  You are a friend of Jesus and a witness of the wedding that is far above the one that is studies in the verses below.

What we can deduce this day is that the followers of Jesus were on the road to a wedding.  Taking a step back in a read of the whole Bible, so are all who call themselves followers of Jesus Christ.  We are all on the road to a wedding, at the wedding below or some of both.  In fact, at the end of time, the reality in fulness is in the wedding supper of the Lamb “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory. For the wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7).

In the meantime, not all of the disciples going with Jesus have the same experiences.  Peter joined on day four for example.  A question could be asked on which of those experiences can prepare his disciples the best for the first miracle of the ministry.  I propose that it is  a matter of time that they learned all of these approaches are valid. They are all crucial before either an individual or group faith can have a fulness of response to Jesus.  And at least some have to be developed to approach Jesus with the fulness of “prayer and petition” (Philippians 4:6) so that the consciousness of the person and nature of Jesus is rightly formed.

On the way to any upcoming consolation of the Lord, the embracing of the meaning of such an encounter with Jesus is indeed of great importance.  There would be one person in this upcoming wedding that is undergirded by the characteristics outlined above.  But this person would not be a fisherman or a scholar or hermit.  Instead there is an example for us by a lovely middle aged woman, likely a carpenter’s widow, from Nazareth. And her formation was a process.

The Day 1 of Mary- – Her fiat (Luke 1:46-55), like what John the Baptist spoke of, included how God was going to bring in a new paradigm that would bring the lowly up and bring the self-exalted low.

The Day 2 of Mary- – Mary and Joseph honored the Lord in how the child who opened her womb was born.  Thus there was a sacrifice of turtledoves which like the baptism of Jesus was a means to “fulfill all righteousness” in the sense of connecting to the covenantal nature of God’s favor as revealed up to that time(Luke 1:22-24).  But yet we know that the grace of God was at work before that or any other works on Mary because grace is in God’s initiative and that action was reflected in Mary’s first encounter with the kingdom of heaven when approached by Gabriel the archangel.  He said “Hail, Full of Grace” (Luke 1:28). This is best translated as a royal greeting with “hail” and that she had been perfected in a past action up to that point by grace.

The Day 3 of Mary- – She dwelled with Jesus.  But Jesus first dwelled in her.  Christianity is not meant to be based on externals first with a subsequent external motivation.  God is indwelling when we give permission.

The Day 4 of Mary- – “May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).  A mission was given to her and she said yes.  That was the power in her life and everything else followed from that.  Saying yes for the mission was a cooperation with the Holy Spirit in which Christ is formed in her.  That is how the person of Jesus was expressed in Mary and in principle for us.

The Day 5 of Mary- – She loved God with her mind and engaged that way in asking how she could get pregnant when “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man(Luke 1:34)?”  One teaching is that she was determined to not know a man because of a perpetual consecration of virginity.  But her engagement of reason was still informed by faith as she “pondered [contemplated] these things in her heart”. (Luke 2:19,51). Her use of critical thinking and humility are good for an example of fully integrated faith and reason.

Jesus and his disciples are on their way to a wedding in Cana.  They were about to see the first miracle of Jesus through the intercession and collaboration of the disciple with the most extravagant love for him who was also his mother with 30 years of a relationship with him.  Every day that we are open to such principles in relationship to Jesus Christ is is a day we can say something “of importance happened today”.  You never know what may happen next. But you will know that Jesus is king.

House of Doubt-Rocking The House Part I

If one looks at the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, he presents himself as a supernatural person with an approach that is above earthly concerns. His agenda changes common narratives.  In the following passage he challenges norms with “super-norms”.

He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,

and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph” (Luke 4:16-22).

Jesus basically hit the assembly with a stun gun on the lowest setting but high in stirring a hunger in the truly humble.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to—  Simply, Jesus is saying that he is given authority from God in heaven.  Outside of the box thinking from an outside of this world source.

bring glad tidings to the poor— This is to say that there is a provision to be made who are poor.  Poor in money?  Poor in spirit? By going into the Old Testament he draws their attention to when manna fell from heaven to the Israelites.  Each day when the daily bread would fall someone would say “Basar!”  Meaning that provision for another day had come.  Jesus came to bring himself as what we needed in spiritual supply as the living bread and not just manna (meaning “What is it?”).

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives-Jesus was sent to proclaim that God wants peace on earth, has goodwill towards humanity and that the jail doors are open due to a pardon.  Where repentance falls in there is for the person to walk out if they accept Jesus in his totality.

recovery of sight to the blind— This has two meanings.  One, there was a blame game around at that time that if someone was infirm in their body that they or their parents sinned for them to be that way (see John 9). Jesus brings a much broader view than that.  The other is the awareness of the need of being saved.  Last, literal miracle on that which is disordered in his will.

to let the oppressed go free— This was about the power of sin that infects the individual as a slave.  Slaves had a servile fear of their master who can show wrath to them if they are caught failing.  Jesus and the Apostle Paul speak of God as Abba, Father (Daddy).   “{H}ow God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him” (Acts 10:38).

Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.- With that Jesus laid down the gauntlet.  He has made a declaration about himself and that going forward his ministry can be up for markers that he is the fulfillment of this prophecy.  With the word “today” Jesus marks himself in history.

So right here is a summary of what Jesus is in the gospel and meaning to do then and now:  be heaven sent, be the intimate answer to the unspoken questions of the heart, communicate a pardon to humanity,  illuminate hearts with grace and truth and heal the inner parts of the person.  From this he would draw them into being partakers of his divine nature in him being our fulfillment of all desire.

If one is open to God working outside of the box, that does not seem bad,   Otherwise, it could seem to be.

We see both here.

And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words.… They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph— Not the only time that a group would have mixed reviews of Jesus.  Thoughts like, “I like his words, but shouldn’t he be a bit of a surprise?  As we will see, Jesus loves them too much not to give them a surprise.  Just not always the one they are looking for.
